Warm modern: walnut, bouclé and arched shapes
Warm modern is the safest commercial choice because it flatters almost any buyer profile: it is contemporary without being cold, and the materials photograph with depth. It only conflicts with rooms whose value comes from original detail.
Palette and materials
- Walnut and smoked oak rather than pale timber, which gives the image contrast without making it dark.
- Cream, mushroom and greige on walls and upholstery; one brass or bronze accent for warmth.
- Bouclé or textured wool on the seating — flat matte fabric disappears under portal compression.
Shapes to place
- One arched or curved element: a mirror, a lamp base or the back of a chair. Straight lines everywhere read as an office.
- A large rug with a visible border, to define the seating zone in an open plan.
- Two heights of lighting — floor lamp and table lamp — so the room shows layers rather than one source.
Where it fails
- Period homes with cornices, fireplaces or sash windows: the furniture competes with the features.
- Very small rooms, where walnut and texture together close the space down.
- Rooms with strong existing colours, which the neutral palette then makes look accidental.
