Coastal: pale linen, rattan and daylight blue
Coastal styling sells light and air, which means the palette has to stay close to the wall colour and the textures have to look sun-bleached rather than painted on. Two shades of blue is enough; three turns the image into a nursery.
Palette and materials
- Sand, chalk white and one muted blue — closer to a grey sky than to a swimming pool.
- Rattan, jute and unbleached linen; anything glossy breaks the daylight impression.
- Timber left pale and unstained, so the room does not gain a dark horizontal band.
Shapes to place
- A low slatted chair or bench, which reads coastal without needing props.
- Loose cushions in two textures rather than five matching ones.
- Sheer curtains only if the window is already in frame — otherwise they add a pale rectangle with no purpose.
Where it fails
- Inland properties, where the style looks like a holiday let and undermines a family home.
- Rooms without a window in the photograph: the style has nothing to point at.
- Winter listings, where buyers are looking for warmth rather than air.
